Argonaut Games Tease Buck Bumble's Return

Back when we interviewed Jez San and the team at Argonaut about the return of Croc, I spoke about another one of my favourite characters that I spent a lot of time playing with as a kid - Buck Bumble. Jez said he was surprised that people still had so much love for Buck and that the cult following for the baddest bee in town was so strong. I asked if we would be seeing him again any time soon, but Jez's response didn't fill me with much hope.

In true Argonaut style, they have teased Buck's return with a pun on April 20th, otherwise known as 4/20. I'm not saying that this is because we pressed the team about Buck, but I'm going to go to sleep tonight thinking that we might have helped bring the idea to fruition.

For those of you who are in the know, 4/20 is all about grass, and I'm not talking the kind you find in your garden. The slogan 'a different kind of buzz on 4/20' has gone viral on X, with Buck appearing in a new, enhanced form with his trademark blaster. 'Bee sure to follow us' had me in stitches too, but I'm a huge fan of Dad jokes. Well played, guys!

If you've never played Buck Bumble before, then you're in for a treat. He's a bee with a gun who shoots down mutants enemies in mid-air dogfights (or bee-fights in this case). The soundtrack was my first foray into 90s urban garage music (or 90s shed music as my mates call it) too. If they do a remake, I want the same songs on there 100%.

As for now, that's all the news I have, but I'll be back with more and hopefully a review of the game as soon as we get more information!

A sequel to Pokémon Brown (which is another popular ROM hack itself), Pokémon Prism is a story-led experience containing 253 Pokémon, the new region of Naljo and sections which allow you to take control of your Pokémon in the game’s world. It’s celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, so what better time to cover the cheats that work with one of the best Pokemon ROM hacks ever made?

As we always have to advise, each of these cheat codes will need an emulator which supports code entry. It’s highly recommended that you use an emulator that can auto-detect code types, as they’re created by fans emulating or using a variety of cheat code devices. Our recommendations for emulation, particularly for mobile devices, would be Delta or MyBoy!.

How to Use Pokémon Prism Cheat Codes

We’d give you this advice for every Pokémon ROM hack we list cheats for: you must remember to always save your game before applying any cheats, and for the best, most stable results, turn off all other cheats when applying a new one. As there are so many different combinations of codes possible, we can’t guarantee they’ll all work together as intended. Using one at a time is advisable; though it is the case that some cheats clearly work well together, with others remaining functional even after disabling the cheat.

If you get stuck, or any added cheats do crash or otherwise break your game, you can always go back to your save point. Always make use of the different save slots, so you can revert to a different point in the game if you run into problems. It’s important to remember to turn each added cheat off before saving again, too, so that the chances of crashing or otherwise breaking your game by adding new codes are reduced.

Do note that numerous versions of Pokémon Prism are available; we have tested the cheats below on the version which was current as of the time of writing, and found that many cheats published elsewhere aren’t working with this update. All codes on this list have been tested by us here at Retro Dodo, and each cheat’s section tells you how to make sure each cheat code functions as you need it to.

Note On Other Pokémon Prism Codes:

It may be the case that you have seen codes for Pokémon Prism elsewhere, which we haven’t listed. These include Walking Through Walls and Gender Modifiers for Wild Pokémon, for example. However, at Retro Dodo we’ve ensured that every code we’ve shared is fully tested with the current version of Pokémon Prism. Any codes not listed here wouldn’t work properly for us, so we have not included them on this list.

The Ultra Rare Last Remaining Pokémon Style Guide Has Just Gone Up For Auction

Update 20/04/2026 - I knew that the style guide would attract attention from collectors all over the world, and I also knew that it would fetch a pretty penny (or a delightful dollar?) at auction.

After a week-long auction, the style guide has sold for a whopping $57,900, with a lucky bidder by the name of 'ergot' taking home this slice of retro gaming nostalgia. I did wonder whether this would hit the $100,000 mark, I'm not going to lie. Still, a figure just shy of $58,000 is'nt exactly spare change that you find down the back of the sofa, is it?

Check out the full article below to learn all about the style guide!

Original Article 14/04/2026 - InsertBid are well known for getting the most exciting pieces of gaming memorabilia on the planet through their doors, but their latest auction could be one of the rarest items that we've ever seen.

Back when Pokémon was being introduced into Western society for the first time, a Pokémon style guide was created for a meeting at Nintendo of America HQ. Imagine this: it's the first time the series has stepped outside of Japan, and these are the documents that have been translated so that Nintendo's employees in America could get to grips with what would later become one of the most recoginsable franchises in the world. This was at a time before any of us were playing Pokémon Red and Blue (Red and Green already existed in Japan of course), and these style guides would go on to help shape how we understood and embraced Pikachu and his pals.

As you might imagine with materials like this, it wasn't supposed to be something that was kept to one side and one day become a collectible. All of the guides were meant to be destroyed along with other internal documents. I suppose it was so that other companies couldn't get ideas from Nintendo or the press couldn't get hold of leaks, something that happens all the time these days with social media.

There are examples in this guide of what the story of Pokémon actually is too, with the guide explaining what age children in Pallet can adopt Pokémon. It's wild to imagine a world where people didn't know this!

Can you also imagine what would have happened if Pokémon had been announced before the marketing campaign? It could have been catastrophic! Now, this style guide is the only known surviving document from that internal meeting, making it not just a piece of Pokémon memorabilia, but a complete guide on how the phenomenon was essentially marketed to the rest of the globe.

I really love the fact that there was still so much up in the air with regards to names and characters too. It's mad to believe that there was ever a time when some of the characters we know and love never had English translations of names or had finished personalities for Western audiences. The guide shows lots of Pokémon from the 2nd Generation (Gold and Silver) without any names at all. It's probably the only document that can take us definitively back to a time when Pokémon was still in development, which makes it an absolute gem for Pokémon collectors and fans of gaming history.

The style guide is up for auction without any reserve. It has over 5 days left and is currently on $2,350, though I have a strong feeling it will get much higher! If you would like to make a bid, then head to the InsertBid auction page and try your luck!

An open world adventure which removes barriers from exploration, adds many options for Starter Pokémon and allows players to start their adventure from any town or city across two regions, Pokémon Crystal Clear is (unsurprisingly!) one of the best Pokémon ROM hacks around. Of course, there’s plenty more to discover in terms of what this ROM hack can offer, and it’s one that’s been updated numerous times for increased stability as well as even more features. Let’s check out what cheats are available to enhance or transform your experience of Pokémon Crystal Clear even further!

It’s worth noting that all of these cheat codes will need an emulator which supports code entry; even better if your emulator can auto detect code types. Our recommendations for emulation, particularly for mobile devices, would be Delta or MyBoy!.

How to Use Pokémon Crystal Clear Cheat Codes

This is the same advice that we’d give for any Pokémon ROM hack cheats: remember to always save your game before applying any cheats, and for the best, most stable results, turn off all other cheats when applying a new one. As there are so many different combinations of codes possible, we can’t guarantee they’ll all work together as intended.

If you get stuck or the added cheats do crash or otherwise break your game, you can always go back to your save point. It’s important to remember to turn each added cheat off before saving again, too, so that the chances of crashing or otherwise breaking your game by adding a new code are reduced.

Do note that numerous versions of Pokémon Crystal Clear are available; we tested the cheats below on version 2.6.0 and found that many cheats published elsewhere aren’t working with this update. All codes on this list have been tested by us here at Retro Dodo, and each cheat’s section tells you how to make sure each cheat code functions as you need it to.

Notes On Other Pokémon Crystal Clear Codes:

We have tried using other codes for Pokémon Crystal Clear, which we’ve seen elsewhere. However, in the 2.6.0 version of Pokémon Crystal Clear, these wouldn’t work properly for us, so we have not included them on this list.

Demakes, which are retro-styled versions of more modern, technologically advanced titles, are quite a big deal even among officially licensed or developed games, so it’s no surprise to see them appear as ROM hacks. Pokémon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus improves on an already impressive hack, which demakes the Switch title, Pokémon Sword and Shield, quickly becoming one of the best Pokémon ROM Hacks ever made.

Cleverly, it’s a hack of Pokémon FireRed, which itself is a remake (albeit officially) of an older Pokémon title. Let’s check out the cheats you can use to alter your experience of Pokémon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus!

How to Use Pokémon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus Cheat Codes

This is the same advice that we’d give for any Pokémon ROM hack cheats: remember to always save your game before applying any cheats, and for the best, most stable results, turn off all other cheats when applying a new one. As there are so many different combinations of codes possible, we can’t guarantee they’ll all work together as intended.

If you get stuck or the added cheats via your emulator crash or otherwise break your game, you can always go back to your save point. It’s important to remember to turn each added cheat off before saving again, too, so that the chances of crashing or otherwise breaking your game by adding a new code are reduced.

Do note that numerous versions of Pokémon Sword and Shield Ultimate Plus are available; we tested the cheats below on the version which was current as of the time of writing, and found that many cheats published elsewhere aren’t working with this update. All codes on this list have been tested by us here at Retro Dodo, and each cheat’s section tells you how to make sure each cheat code functions as you need it to.

Polish your magic sword and grab a handful of skill points as we look at the best PS2 RPGs of all time! With over 3,800 games for the world’s best-selling console, you’d think it would be hard to pick the 20 best role-playing titles for the system.

Luckily, yours truly here knows a thing or three about being a humongous nerd and loves RPGs on any home console or portable handheld. There’s just something about escaping into a world of magic and shadow that sets my mind racing!

Not only that, but I think I’m right in saying that there’s nothing more addictive in the world of video gaming than levelling up characters and working towards achieving new skills and abilities.

So, we know I’m a fan of role-playing games, but one question still remains: Which titles have I picked for this list of the best PS2 RPGs of all time?

Dark Cloud 2 (2002)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Dark Cloud 2 is the best PS2 RPG of all time! Despite my freaky obsession with FFX, I can’t deny that Dark Cloud 2 is the best RPG on the PlayStation 2. It’s a sequel to Dark Cloud without having any of the same characters or storyline a sequel in name only, then, along with the same epic gameplay style that made the first title such a success.

Wield a sword and a spanner as you help two brave heroes travel back in time in order to change the future. It’s a serious case of the Grandmother paradox (look it up and have your mind blown!)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

So what’s changed and what’s the same as the first game? Well, players still have to find orbs to rebuild their home world, and the same dungeon crawling and explorative gameplay plays a big part.

Dark Cloud 2 introduces a new world-building feature akin to Rollercoaster Tycoon crossed with Black & White. It’s only available after collecting a certain amount of Geostones, so make sure you look everywhere and get them all!

Any epic adventure where time travel is a key part of the storyline is a winner in my book. Battle enemies, chat to enigmatic NPCs, and recruit key allies into your party on your journey. Stop Emperor Griffin from sending the world into chaos or die trying (but also, try not to die, ok?)!

Final Fantasy X (2001)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Before we go ahead, I’m going to let you in on a couple of secrets. I once dyed my hair like the main character, Tidus and got seriously bullied for it, and I also lied to all my mates when they asked me if I was free because I became so obsessed with it.

Yeah, that’s how sad I was as a kid. Still, the game that beats this has gotta be pretty good; I’m a harsh critic with obvious unaddressed obsessive traits that should probably be looked at at a later date…

It’s fair to say that FFX had a big (and unhealthy) impact on my life. Just look at the graphics below, though; this was the first time I’d ever seen anything so mind-blowing. Maybe without this title, I might never have become a games writer, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how much you like my articles!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Admittedly, this screenshot is from the remastered version, but this is how I remember is looking back in 2001. If you know your Final Fantasy games, then you’ll already be aware of how complicated the plot is. I could best describe it as being more puzzling than solving a Sudoku puzzle while hanging by your ears over a red-hot lava pool.

Join Tidus on a mission to defeat a weird whale-looking thing called Sin. Sin’s bad news destroyed our hero’s hometown of Zanarkand, and now Tidus is out for revenge.

Take part in fast-paced battles boasting all the turn-based magic we’ve come to know and love from this series. Take part in Blitzball (a bit like the disc battles from Tron), dye your hair like a prat, and hide from your friends until they leave you alone with your precious game.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age (2004)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Listen, as someone who has just named his new puppy ‘Bilbo’, it’s safe to say that I take Tolkien pretty seriously. I love The Lord Of The Rings: The Third Age and have played it more times than I can count.

It’s an epic adventure and one that all LOTR fans should try for the epic battles and exciting characters alone! All of the best PS2 role-playing games should (and probably have) taken a leaf from Tolkien’s book!

I know RPGs are all about exploring new and exciting universes, but what could be better than stepping into Middle-earth for your very own adventure, complementing the original texts and following in the footsteps of real heroes? Ok, not real, but you know what I mean…

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

So what puts Lord of the Rings: The Third Age above Final Fantasy XII and Tales of Symphonia? Well, it’s a game that sees warriors following the fellowship and dealing with the mess they left behind. Do I need to say anything else?

If that isn’t enough to tempt you in, then let me drop a serious nerd-bomb. You can even play some of the epic scenes from the movies, taking part in battles that help to sway the fate of Middle-earth.

Plus, you don’t even have to fight on the side of good. Become one of Sauron’s most trusted warriors and see Middle-earth burn if you so wish. Battle against Orcs or team up with the Balrogs in one of the deepest RPGs ever made. Which side will you choose?

Dark Cloud (2000)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Dark Cloud is one of my favourite RPGs of all time, and that’s not just because the front cover looks like a still from a Zelda game. Ok, so it looks exactly like Link, but I would imagine that the developers knew that when they made the front cover. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, after all.

Plus, if it worked for the guys who made Windbound, then I’m sure the Dark Cloud team are sleeping easy at night.

Like Windbound (although Dark Cloud did it first- something else they stole!), players need to watch a thirst meter on the screen to make sure they’re topped up with liquids. Without enough H2O, health starts to drain away, so find some water pronto!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Let’s meet Toan, the Kokiri-looking protagonist in Dark Cloud. He’s no stranger to beating back enemies with a sword and has to gather together special orbs in order to rebuild his world. Toan can also be renamed however you want as shown in our screenshot above from our Editor, Theo.

True to RPG fashion, upgrading plays a key part of the gameplay. The difference here is that its the weapons get better with time and not the characters wielding them. Defeat an enemy, and your weapon takes on the experience, not you. It’s a cool take on levelling up and makes the game feel fresh and inherently different.

As a fantasy novelist myself, the storyline in Dark Cloud sucks me in like the Large Hadron Collider. It’s a fantastic world to get lost in and serves as a taster for another title that you’re definitely going to see in a few minutes time!

Grandia II (2002)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Some of you may have first come across Grandia II over on our list of the best Dreamcast RPGs. Whichever console you came to this title on, I bet you’ve never forgotten just how spectacular it was.

Once again, war is the main theme, although this time it’s the gods of light and darkness battling against each other. Heroes vs Villains, both wielding unimaginable powers that forged the universe, and you’re the one to make sure that good comes out on top simple, right?

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Players control a dude called Ryudo, not to be confused with the Hadouken-wielding legend from the Street Fighter series. It’s your job to make sure he and his companions survive through dangerous dungeons and perilous open-world locations as they fight to save the planet.

And while Grandia II follows more of a traditional turn-based battle system, the characters all have a limited range of movement they can use to whack enemies on their turn. For younger gamers, it’s like the extra hit you get on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle on the Nintendo Switch. The plot of Grandia II is fantasy fiction at its finest, and all the regular RPG elements, such as upping skill points, improving character traits and abilities, and of course kicking some serious butt, add to the overall experience!

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (2001)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time
image credit: interplay Entertainment corp./moby games

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is another one for the Dungeons and Dragons fans out there. It’s basically a video game version of every epic tale that my orc-ish friend Josh has ever subjected me to, with creepy Gauntlet-esque battles and more magic spells than a Gryffindor Common Room party.

It’s so much like D&D because it’s actually based on the the franchise. For those learned in the art, Baldur’s Gate is based on the D&D ‘The Realms’ series, using the same gameplay rules as the third edition.

Honestly, I have no idea what that means. I just love the game, but I’m trying to sound like I know what I’m talking about for all you purists out there!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time
image credit: interplay Entertainment corp./moby games

BG is all about hack ‘n slash meets magical RPG madness. Customise characters and fight in real time; there’s no turn-based skirmishes here, folks!

And the best part for me when I was a kid was the option to play alongside a friend for co-op beatdown action. Games like this are always more fun with a mate beside you, and what better way to quash the forces of evil than with someone who you can shout at without fear of repercussions.

Stop the forces of evil from sullying yet another peaceful realm. Listen, it’s a tried and tested formula, and one that you’ll find in pretty much all of the best RPGs.

Shadow Hearts: From The New World (2005)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

It might be sitting near the middle point in this article, but don’t let it’s position fool you. This is definitely a game that you need to try out as soon as humanly (or demonly) possible. Players follow the story of 16-year-old Johnny Garland. His profession, not paper boy or shop worker – he’s a detective.

Yes, a detective that’s got amnesia and who lost his father and sister in a terrible accident. Even with this severe condition, he teams up with a bounty hunter 5 years his senior to follow a criminal gang, before coming across an otherworldly demon that gobbles up criminals. Yeah, this is a weird one.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Shania, the bounty hunter I mentioned above, is also searching for the criminal eating demons and wants to use her powers to stop them. She’s like the bounty hunter version of Eleven from Stranger Things. This is the first RPG in our list that has a battle system based on a power generator.

Like Shadow Hearts: Covenant, From The New World’s predecessor, players must spin the judgement ring and stop it on a correct area in order to let loose a powerful attack. The more accurate your reflexes, the more damage you’ll end up inflicting!

Once again, the graphics look incredible and are further proof that the PS2 was a console before its time. This is one title everyone needs in their life!

Persona 4 (2008)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Persona 4 brings more high-school-demon-slaying antics to Sony’s most famous console. It follows on from Persona 3 and sees players returning to high-school life for more mystery, murder, and mayhem.

All of the same features from the last game apply once more, including the use of personas in battle. This time, however, players delve into a TV world to try and figure out why corpses keep appearing in their sleepy, one-horse town.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

I don’t know what you’re thinking right now, but I’m pretty sure I’d be scared witless if I found dead bodies on the streets and stuff coming out of my TV! A new feature to the series is a weather forecast system, with events only happening at certain times of day if weather conditions are met. Using the system, players can plan ahead for events and make sure they're prepped and ready.

Upgrade characters, battle with mythical personas, and collect more items than you’d see in a series of Storage Hunters. Seriously, even just making new personas in the weirdly titled ‘Velvet Room’ is enough to keep you coming back for more!

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (2004)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Sony fans will no doubt know all about Dante and the epic Devil May Cry series. Well, he features in this game alongside a cast of excellent characters, including the main protagonist ‘True Demon’.

Dante appears as a boss pretty early on in the game, and if you manage to beat him in the right way, you can actually take him along on the adventure with you as a party member. Pretty cool, right? Nocturne is the first Shin Megami Tensei title that PAL and NTSC gamers ever got to try, and it certainly left a lasting impression.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

The whole game has a bit of a Dark Sith vibe to it, and as it’s an enhanced version of the original Japanese release, there are lots of features that give it an edge over the original game.

For newbies to the game, Dante isn’t the only boss that can be recruited into your party. Add humongous demons to your team as you progress through the game, becoming a force that even the Fellowship couldn’t stand up against! Explore dungeons and labyrinths, pull off epic moves, and face off against ‘The Fiends’ in fierce battles. It’s dark, it’s dangerous, and it’s damn addictive!

Xenosaga Episode I – Der Wille Zur Macht (2002)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Xenosaga Episode 1 – Der Willie Zur Macht is an absolute belter of a game. Some of you might not have heard of this one before, but it’s definitely worth a look. In fact, if we had a Retro Dodo stamp of approval, I’d put one on your screen right here!

Der Willie zur Macht is the first chapter in a trilogy of games, although the big ‘Episode 1’ in the title might have given that away. It’s filled with magic and mystery, with players developing spells and new abilities by upgrading a skills tree.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Great news for fans of knowing when they’re going to get their arses kicked; the enemies in Xenosaga can be seen from a distance. There’s no random encounters to be had here, just plain old beatdowns with enemies that you choose to fight.

Like Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre, players must plan moves in advance if they have a hope of coming out of tussles with enemies alive. Calculate your attacks and make every hit count!

RPG fans will love the need to purchase spells and nurturing specific character traits. It’s also a pretty deep game too, drawing inspiration from multiple spiritual beliefs and philosophical speakers. Fancy that, an RPG that you might just learn something from along the way!

Final Fantasy XII (2006)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

With so many role playing games on the PS2, it’s hard to pick which ones to feature in this list. Still, Final Fantasy XII has always been one of my favourites in the canon and it more than holds its own with modern RPGs on all the new consoles coming out today.

Can you believe that this was the first Final Fantasy game to boast open world gameplay? Crazy, isn’t it! It also gave players more control over other party companion characters and what actions they can perform in battle.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Let’s get into the nerdiness, shall we? Gamers start off in Ivalice, a region that is constantly at war. The PS2 makes it look pretty nice to say that it’s filled with death and destruction!

Follow a princess who has joined the resistance and taken up life as a pirate. If that’s not bad ass enough for you, then there’s also a young chap who want’s to become a Space Pirate.

We all know how annoying Viridian Forest is in Pokémon Red, and for the first time, those same random battles don’t appear in Final Fantasy. Monsters can be seen in advance, but it’s still worth fighting them to get gold and other treasures!

Arc The Lad: Twilight Of The Spirits (2003)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Seriously, how many of you can remember playing this game. I think Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits stayed in my disc drive for about 6 months solid! Two races living in seclusion, a spiritual stone that has them up in arms and creating a massive argument... yeah, all hell is about to break loose!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Twilight of the Sprits is the fourth game in the series and, while it sounds as though it could be a two-peace country act, it’s actually one of the most tactical games ever made.

Even though the game is huge, the party character size remains pretty small and doesn’t get too complicated. There’s no massive skill tree to prune; it just concentrates gameplay and storyline, which is pretty much what we all come to RPGs for anyway!

Persona 3 (2006)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Persona 3 gives us a very accurate account of what happens to every orphaned high school student that moves to the suburbs. They all head to their dormitory for the first time, find themselves in a tussle with a weird shadow creature, and discover the power to summon Patronus-style demons called Personas. Yeah… like I said… an accurate account.

With this new ability awakened, you join the SEES, ‘Specialised Extracurricular Execution Squad’, and take to the realm between light and shadow that appears during the Dark Hour. An after-school club that kills demons… that’s a bit more exciting than drama club, isn’t it!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Persona 3 is part of the epic Shin Megami Tensei canon. Still, you don’t need to have played the other games in the series to understand what’s going on in P3, which is always good for newbies to the RPG world.

There are life-sim elements to this game that feel a little like Bully, too. Go to normal classes, sift through boring homework, and deal with the angst of teenage love as you wait every day for demon bashing to begin, that wasn’t a euphemism, by the way… I’m talking about when the rift in the shadow world opens at the Dark Hour and not… well, you know!

Summon personas to fight for you, use weapons, or wield magic spells, assumedly learnt in the magic class of the science of wizardry. The turn-based battles are sublime in Persona 3, with stunning backdrops for every fight and terrifying enemies that will leave you looking forward to doing that virtual homework in the morning!

Tales Of Symphonia (2004)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

It doesn’t matter whether you first came to this cell-shaded masterpiece on the PS2 or whether you added it to your collection of the best GameCube games, Tales Of Symphonia is a winner on both platforms.

Who is this game for? Well, specifically fans of RPGs such as Phantasy Star Online and Final Fantasy, but generally anyone who likes attacking ferocious beasties with swords and magic. That should be pretty much everyone reading this list, then!

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Join Lloyd and his companions as they head out on a mission to save the world of Slyvarant. There’s a catch, however; everything they do in Sylvarant affects the fate of a parallel world. One good turn doesn’t deserve another, it seems; good things make bad stuff happen in this mammoth open world adventure!

This game shouldn’t really be that much of a new concept to RPG fans. I’m sure many of you have played the ‘Tales’ series before, and Symphonia, the 5th title in the canon, is jam-packed full of Holy Magic Century-style battles with all the tactical brilliance of Fire Emblem.

Dragon Quest VIII – Journey Of The Cursed King (2004)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Dragon Quest VIII – Journey of the Cursed King is a bonafide PS2 classic. Trust me when I say that it didn’t need the playable demo of Final Fantasy XII bundled with it to sell copies… although let’s be honest, it probably helped in the long run!

The PS2 often surprises me with its graphics, operating far beyond what a console from the year 2000 should have been able to cope with.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Ok, let’s talk about what this game is. Firstly, it’s the first ever 3D Dragon Quest title. It’s also the first game in the series to be released outside of Japan and also the first to feature voice acting as opposed to just text on the screen. A lot of firsts there… that’s gotta mean it’s good… right?

The Final Fantasy demo might have given it away, but this is also a Square game and one that definitely takes and adapts key elements form the FF series. But you know what; it certainly stands out from the crowd.

It boasts so many hidden items that you’d think it’s a Zelda game, and the characters are so memorable that you’ll still be comparing other NPCs to them years after you complete it.

Kingdom Hearts II (2005)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Kingdom Hearts II is next up in this list of the best PS2 RPGs of all time. It’s Disney-licious action mixed with Final Fantasy vibes.

Players once again take control of the loveable Sora while getting help from a host of Disney characters such as Jiminy Cricket and Jack Sparrow as you head out to find King Mickey.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

As Disney now seems to own every series and film in the world, it won’t be a surprise that characters from Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron also feature in Kingdom Hearts II.

If you’ve ever watched a Disney cartoon as a kid, then picking out all the different characters provides extra entertainment in this fantastic fantasy RPG. Wield magical weapons, use abilities from the world of Final Fantasy, and call special summons to your aid in action packed battles!

Rogue Galaxy (2005)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Rogue Galaxy is a space age shooter that’s also an open world adventure! What’s not to love! When it comes to fantasy titles on the PS2, Rogue Galaxy sets the bar high. It’s oozing with all the elements that make a good RPG; we’re talking real-time battles, upgrading stats, and weapon collecting galore.

And the best part is that you play as a space pirate in a time when no one can travel… a bit like during the Covid pandemic! Cool, right?

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

The battles are what makes this game great. Weirdly for a PS2 game there’s zero loading time and the gameplay is faster than Sonic the Hedgehog…

Like plenty of other RPGs in this list, players level up their weapons instead of messing around with skill trees, etc. Mould weapons together to create the ultimate slasher! It takes you to a whole other world!

Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter (2002)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Get ready to channel your inner dragon as we are a look at Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter! In a time where earth was called Deep Earth and cities were basically massive mazes that intertwined with one another, No-one has ever seen the sky or the sun. Science rules, and there is pretty much no law whatsoever.

Sounds a bit like the modern day then, really.

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Players control Ryu, but not the one from Street Fighter. He’s trying to stop artificial monsters from terrorising the citizens of Deep Earth. In saving a particular citizen, however, he discovers a power deep inside him that he could only have ever dreamed of.

That’s what we all dream of, right? There’s no dragon, but Ryu can transform into a dragon… sounds pretty magical to me!

Champions: Return To Arms (2005)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

The 19th spot in this list of the best PS2 RPGs goes to the incredible Champions: Return To Arms! Remember the Champions of Norrath? Of course you do; how could you not! Well, this is the sequel to that epic game, and it brings back more epic RPG goodness where players control one of seven playable factions or races of people.

Move through the ominously titled Planes of Power as you collect shards of an evil dude that has been destroyed. And this game also has one of my favourite parts of any RPG: a morality engine.

Yes, choose where to be a good or a downright villain as you move through the levels. Either do away with the evil dudes altogether or bring him back Voldemort-style.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance (2006)

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is an RPG with a little twist. Gaming and the MCU go together like peanut butter and jelly, right? Well, pairing Marvel characters together in an RPG spectacular feels like a dream come true.

See X-Men and Avengers fighting side by side; does it get any better than that?

20 Best PlayStation 2 (PS2) RPGs Of All Time

In true RPG fashion, there are different endings for you and your team depending on which characters you choose. That gives gamers tonnes of ways to play and a different surprise every time!

Personally, seeing Captain America and Wolverine team up makes me feel like a kid again… or an even bigger kid than I already am.

Mega Man 2: The LCD Game Has Been Remade For Game Boy

Sometimes, it's the remakes we didn't know we needed that end up being the remakes we can't stop talking about. ZeichiGames has put a lot of effort into taking the Tiger Handhelds classic version of Mega Man 2 and bringing it to the Game Boy in a new ROM that supports the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy SNES cartridge.

As you can imagine, remaking an LCD game for the Game Boy isn't a straightforward task. ZeichiGames has taken the opportunity to give the LCD game some new mechanics that make it easier to play, all while capturing that simple Tiger Electronics 'limited gameplay' feel at the same time.

There are 8 stages of play with a robot opponent to face in the first 6 stages. You'll need to take on these Robomasters and get their weapons in order to defeat future enemies. Don't just fire willy-nilly, though; weapons have a meter that means you won't be able to use them when it runs out.

The Game Boy version of the Mega Man 2 LCD game is free to download and play from Itch.io, though you can make a donation to ZeichiGames to help support them if you wish!

Tomb Raider Has Been Reimagined As A Side-scroller

It seems to be Tomb Raider's time in the sun at the moment. Not only is the game finally coming to the N64 after 3 decades, but it's now coming to us reimagined as a classic side-scrolling title next month!

Delca and Tryxe have been working on giving the seminal PS1 adventure a brand new look, swapping the 3D environments we know and remember from 1996 for levels that feel like they have dropped straight from Altered Beast. Check out the trailer below!

11 levels have been transformed to give us a feel more akin to Shinobi than Tomb Raider. But you know what, it works! The levels look amazing and change the entire way you think about the game, despite the locations still bringing back nostalgic memories.

The planned release is for May 2026, so we don't have long to wait to try it out. Delca and Tryxe have confirmed that this is a free-to-play, not-for-profit passion project, so hopefully they'll avoid any angry letters from Sony!

Keep an eye out for an update here when the game releases!

The Famous Tony Hawk Pro Skater LEGO Set Has Almost Hit 10,000 Votes

If you're a fan of your LEGO, then you'll no doubt already know about Arcade Bricker's Tony Hawk's LEGO TV Set. It's one of those sets that has done the rounds at conventions and been shared online to the point of achieving viral fame, and it's kicking up a storm on the LEGO Ideas website too!

Arcade Bricker, aka Dave McClelland has created this incredible Tony Hawk's Pro Skater set with an actual moving minifigure that you control via a skateboard on the outside of the TV housing. I say 'outside of the TV housing' like it's a normal thing for a LEGO set, but this is anything but an ordinary set!

The Famous Tony Hawk Pro Skater LEGO Set Has Almost Hit 10,000 Votes
Credit: Arcade Bricker

Set inside a CRT with the clever branding of 'Tony' is a fully-playable THPS experience that captures all of the hi-octane excitement of the 1999 PS1 game. The whole set takes you straight back to the 90s in the best possible way - I just wish I had a glass of Sunny D to sip while playing it.

Inside the CRT is a moving set that you can interact with using the Tech-Deck on the outside of the TV. Moving the board moves a LEGO skater on a counterweight on the inside, allowing you to pull off tricks and recreate the feeling of getting huge air in the game. And as this is a LEGO set, you can change the design of the ramps and rails whenever you get bored!

This set is absolutely unbelievable, and the fact that we've seen footage of it in action makes it even better. As with all LEGO Ideas sets, it needs to get 10,000 votes to be put in front of the LEGO Ideas board. Sets have a total of 789 days to reach that point if they hit all of the milestones in between, but Dave has almost reached that point in just 29 days.

It's a massive achievement - Dave only needs 40 more votes to reach 10,000 supporters. Head to the official LEGO Ideas page to cast your vote for free. Let's get it over the line before the end of the day!

Yesterday, SNK revealed that they're releasing an all-new NEOGEO console named the AES+, with no emulation designed to be an exact 1:1 replica to thhe original AES released in the early 90s.

This news has gone down well with the retro gaming community, for good reason. It's what we all wanted, no fluff, just a brand new console compatible with new and old AES cartridges, featuring modern accessories and 10 brand new games to collect.

Originally, the AES+ was available to pre-order via Plaion, and it still is, but it's also now mades it way to Amazon, allowing customers to get it quickly and perhaps skip past the international shipping fees, you can find the listing on Amazon below.

Consoles

Accessories

Games

Pre-orders have begun for some countries, but you'll have to wait until November 12th before shipping begins on its official release date. Typically, here in the UK, Amazon delivers pre-orders on the release date, so it's a good way to grab it as quickly as possible!

Our Favourite Games Preservation Website Has Been Hacked

We met Don, the owner of Console Variations, last year for an episode of The Retroad Show, not only to shake hands with the owner of our favourite preservation website, but to witness his mighty retro gaming collection in person.

Mighty was an understatement, featuring one of one consoles, an MTV collection of GameCubes, ridiculously rare accessories and a Nintendo DS handheld that costs more than my down payment on my house.

Don had these consoles for a very important reason: he was the owner of ConsoleVariations.com, a free resource to discover and document every variant of gaming consoles ever released into the wild, and not into the wild.

Our Favourite Games Preservation Website Has Been Hacked
CV's announcement on social media.

Don founded ConsoleVariations in 2018 to document and preserve video game history, with data, images and videos of some of the world's rarest game consoles, which we had the opportunity of witnessing in person.

However, recently, Don's creation was hacked. A user uploaded a PHP script behind multiple images uploaded onto his free resource, with a likely goal of extracting data and/or damaging the website entirely.

Unfortunately, it worked, and the website has been forced to go back to basics, removing some very vital features that make preservation easy and open to the public. Features such as image uploads, account creation, and searching have now been officially removed.

We spoke with Don to ask about the future of Console Variations, and although it's certainly taking a step back and will likely do so for a while, it's clear that Don is determined to continue his work and get to work on fixing the hack's mess alongside bringing back some of the features that were removed, such as "uploading images by the end of the month".

It's upsetting to see this free resource being forced to downgrade itself, and even more so, thinking about the cretin that would do this to such a great, free, friendly resource that I know has helped thousands of gamers and collectors since its founding.

Our Favourite Games Preservation Website Has Been Hacked

Don's community are already stepping in offering donations and help to get this back up and working again. Don's focus is on working with his developers to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we, too, hope that he can. We highly recommend following ConsoleVariations on socials to keep updated with the progress.

AYN Increases Price Of Thor Max Handheld By 20%

It was only a matter of time before this year's most popular retro handheld gets a price adjustment. The price increase of storage is affecting thousands of businesses across the globe, and most handheld manufacturers that I know of.

Retroid has increased its prices, and so has AYANEO recently, but now, those waiting to pull the trigger on the Thor could be affected by a price increase.

I say could because, as of right now, the Thor Max (16GB/1TB) is the only handheld being affected, going from an original price of $449 to $549. That's a 19.6% price increase! That's hefty!

AYN Increases Price Of Thor Max Handheld By 20%
AYN's announcement via Discord

Alongside the announcement of the Thor Max price increase, AYN have stated that to counter the increase in Lite/Pro Models of the Thor, they will have to change to UFS 3.1 storage, which simply means it will be a little slower when transferring/downloading files. This won't affect gameplay much, or at all, but its worth noting that it's a technical "downgrade".

"UFS 4.0 is no longer available at a sustainable level. As a result, Thor and Odin 3 will transition to UFS 3.1 moving forward (From new preorder Thor Batch 6 and Odin 3 Batch 7)," states AYN.

For those disappointed in the price increase, AYN has revealed a new model configuration featuring 16GB RAM and 512GB storage that will be available to pre-order in the next batch.

SNK Reveals New NEOGEO Console Called AES+ Coming This Year

I'm a big fan of modern remakes of old consoles. SEGA made some great mini versions a few years back, Analogue just launched their new Nintendo 64, and ModRetro has their infamous Chromatic for GAME BOY enthusiasts.

But, we NEOGEO fans have been left in the dust, literally if you consider the ammount collecting on our old consoles, right? Well, the time has come, the NEOGEO is getting a new, modern remake of their AES, being called the AES+ (Advanced Entertainment System).

The new NEOGEO AES+ is being reborn with high-quality design improvements, staying faithful to the original hardware, alongside quality of life upgrades such as HDMI out, DIP switches and overclocking starting at $249.99/£179.99/€199.99 with a planned release of 12th November 2026.

Gameplay on the NEOGEO AES+ is not achieved through emulation; instead, the console is powered by its legacy ASIC chips, re-engineered by modern standards to accurately replicate the original machine's
hardware and software. The system natively plays game software from both new and old game cartridges for an authentic retro gaming experience. Not emulation, not FPGA approximation, but true console reincarnation etched back into silicon, according to SNK.

Main Features

  • 1:1 replica of the original console from the 90s.
  • Unmistakable and uncompromising arcade-grade build quality.
  • Hardware-faithful reimplementation with new quality of life features.
  • No emulation - Powered by re-engineered ASIC chips.
  • Compatible with new NEOGEO AES game cartridges and backward- compatible with original NEOGEO AES game cartridges.
  • Low-latency HDMI output.
  • Original AV output for CRT enthusiasts.
  • DIP switches for language selection, overclocking and display mode selection.
  • Permanent High Score saves (Memory Card required).
  • Includes the wired (15-pin connector) Arcade Stick - also a 1:1 replica of the original.

SNK are also releasing this with authentic, modernised accessories and a bunch of new AES+ games too, making it an even more exciting time for NEOGEO fans. The announcement includes an Anniversary Edition of the AES+, which comes in White, a wireless controller, a wireless arcade stick, a new Memory Card and 10 new retro games with boxes and manuals to explore... I know, I need to change my pants too.

The wireless NEOGEO AES+ Arcade Stick is a 1:1 replica of the original stick, built to mirror the control panel found on SNK's legendary MVS arcade cabinets, connected by a 15-pin connector that connects to the arcade stick wirelessly. The same goes for the wireless controller, too, packed with the classic micro-switched thumbstick and 4-button layout.

The Polymega Remix is putting game preservation first. That box above might look a little like an old-school printer, but it's actually a portable device that you can use to digitise CD-based games and also cartridges using extra modules. Once digitised, they can be played on any compatible device through the Polymega App.

If you have a Sega CD collection, PS1 games, or CD/DVD games from any retro system, you'll be able to load them into Remix and make digital versions of them. You'll be able to do everything from NES to N64 carts with this as well via separate Element modules, making this a one-stop shop for game preservation.

For those people who travel around a lot and want a way to take their collection with them or would just prefer to play their games in a more modern format, Remix is going to be revolutionary. It's made up of two parts - the Remix base unit, and the Polymega app, which allows users to add patches to their games, see virtual display modes, and much more.

At this moment in time, the Polymega has support for PC gaming handhelds, Intel-based Macs, Windows, and laptops. Polymega have said that they're working on bringing the platform to iOS and Android as well as Apple Silicon devices. If I can take my existing discs and get them onto my iPhone using Remix, that would be a dream come true. It would do great things for people making legal versions of their games and hopefully change the stance on emulation as a whole.

Pre-orders for Remix go live today at 16:00 UK time/8.00 PT from the Polymega website and will cost $199 USD. Remix orders will begin shipping in May, with the Polymega App arriving afterwards once orders have arrived. And for any of our Japanese readers, you can make orders from World Game Express.

Pokémon Snap Is Getting PS1 & 3DS Editions

I love that even in a world where we're getting consoles with increasingly more impressive graphics and games that are taking decades to make, most of us are just excited about the fact that the N64 and PS1 seem to be swapping game catalogues.

It was only this morning when I wrote about Lara Croft heading to the N64 thanks to the efforts of a hard-working dev, and now, I've discovered that Pokémon Snap is heading to the PS1 in a new project.

The project comes to us from Manuel Rodríguez Matesanz and is very much a work in progress, but I wanted to cover it because it's a really interesting concept. Manuel currently only has a test build made using Unity 6 and the PSX Exporter.

Despite showing the PS1 version in the header of this article, Manuel is actually working on a version for the 3DS using Unity 5 that will be rebuilt entirely from scratch and doesn't need the original ROM to run.

Keep your eyes peeled for more on both of these projects as I get them - exciting things are coming.
